Working with Adults of Emotionally Immature Parents

Please note: This is a 2022 episode – currently re-applying for 2023 accreditation

In this episode, we talk with Clinical Psychologist, Lindsay Gibson about her publications Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents: How to Heal from Distant, Rejecting, Or Self-Involved Parents and her most recent publication Self-Care for Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents -Honor Your Emotions, Nurture Your Self, and Live with Confidence.

We discuss the 4 kinds of Emotionally Immature parents that she outlines in her book, and how this is experienced by the children of these parents, and the impact this has on their sense of self and relationships with their own internal experiences. We will also explore what it is like for the therapist to be in therapy with clients who present as emotionally immature, and the impact this can have in terms of transference and countertransference, and the boundaries the therapist requires to be able to work in a way that makes sense for them.
