The Grieving Brain

In this episode we talk with Prof. Mary-Frances O’Conner about her recent publication The Grieving Brain: The Surprising Science of How We Learn from Love and Loss. Prof. O’Conner paints a picture for us about what is happening on a neurological level when our brains encounter grief. She unpacks the various dimensions of the “mind-mapping” mechanisms that get disrupted and disorientated when faced with loss, as well other body processed that are affected. We also spend some time distinguishing between normal grief processes and, what the DSM 5 terms, “Prolonged Grief Disorder”.
